ST. CLOUD - Junior forward Emily Shaffer scored 24 points and the Worthington Trojans girls basketball team hung on to edge Rocori 56-55 Tuesday afternoon on the second day of the St. Cloud Tech Holiday Tournament.
The Trojans, who lost to Sauk Rapids-Rice 56-43 Monday on the first day of the tournament, led by 11 points over Rocori with three minutes remaining in the game Tuesday. But some poor decisions led to a late Spartan comeback, and a made shot with time running out pulled Rocori within a point as the game ended.
“Just a case where the kids got tired and were making poor decisions down the stretch,” said WHS head coach Eric Lindner.
The win evened Worthington’s record at 5-5.
Shaffer hit on two 3-point field goals, seven 2-pointers and four free throws for her 24 points. Teammate Ahmitara Alwal chipped in with 10 points.
Callie Swanberg, a sophomore center, led Rocori with 14 points.
Worthington moved out to a 36-24 lead at intermission, making several of its baskets in transition and beating the Rocori press on the dribble. Defensively, the Trojans employed a lot of zone and man-to-man pressure, which forced the Spartans into several turnovers.
Worthington converted 20-of-34 free throws in the contest compared to Rocori’s 15-of-22. Shaffer’s shots accounted for all the Trojans’ 3-point makes, and Rocori made none from long range.
Other than the ending, Lindner said, his girls played well for the tournament. “They really did a nice job of playing with intensity they needed to have. They just needed to do a better job of playing down the stretch,” he said.
