WILLMAR - Worthington ran into another tough opponent Saturday and ultimately took a 6-1 nonconference loss to Willmar.
Kelly Newman and Coral Owens provided the Trojans with a victory at the No. 2 doubles spot by winning a thriller. They opened their match against Avery Hovland and Amanda Zuidema with a 6-4 win but fell 7-5 in the second set. In a tiebreaker for the win, Newman and Owens survived a 10-8 nailbiter to earn the win.
Erika Schutte and Shelby Larson played a similar match at first singles, but were unable to come up with the victory. They dropped their first set against Bergen Vollan and Olivia Corneil 6-2 but came back with a 6-4 triumph in the second. The Cardinal duo had a little left in the tank as they took a 10-2 win in the tiebreaker.
Willmar was particularly strong on the singles’ side of the competition. Cayle Hovland beat Anna Kill 6-0, 6-0 at first singles with Paige Stewart losing by the same score to Jordyn Svoboda in the No. 2 spot. Elise Bierbaum of the Cardinals knocked off Trojans’ third singles player Tatyana Clark 6-0, 6-1 while Jamie Newman fell 6-0, 6-1 to Lydia Morrell at fourth singles.
McKayla Ebbers and Jasmine Ling finished on the wrong end of a 6-0, 6-0 final score at No. 3 doubles.
Worthington is back on the road today for a 4 p.m. contest against Sioux Falls Lincoln.
