MARSHALL - Worthington won a pair of three-set thrillers on the singles side and took two of the three doubles matches Tuesday for a 4-3 victory over Marshall.
“We played awesome,” Trojans’ head coach Mike Marquardt said. “Two three-setters and (we) won both. Excellent job by all. Phenomenal win.”
Shelby Larson and Erika Schutte came up with the crucial wins for Worthington at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Larson dropped her first set to Katherine Roseland but came back to force a third with a 6-4 victory. The Trojan junior maintained that momentum in the third, winning 6-3 to get the win.
Schutte cruised to a 6-1 win in the opening set of her No. 4-singles match against MacKenzie Schultz. The Tiger junior came back with a 6-3 victory in the second, but Schutte was in total command in the rubber match. She won 6-0 for the victory.
Kelly Newman and Coral Owens - a new pairing for Worthington at second doubles - swept their match with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph. Tatyana Clark and Katilyn Brunk were dominant in their No. 3 doubles bout. They wont 6-2, 6-0 as the Trojans earned their first Big South Conference win of the season.
Anna Kill and Paige Stewart both lost in two sets for Worthington. At first singles, Kill fell 6-1, 6-2 to Crista Schultze. Stewart dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision in the No. 2 spot.
Marshall’s only win on the doubles’ side came at the No. 1 spot. Trojan tandem Whitney Donkersloot and Quinn Bents fell 6-0, 6-2.
Luverne 5, Redwood Valley 2
REDWOOD FALLS - Luverne continued to show its improvement Tuesday when it took a 5-2 Big South Conference win over Redwood Valley.
Sam Pierce earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jillian Read at first singles. Joci Oye earned a hard-fought 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Kylie Doering. Riley Severtson gave the visitors a 3-1 record in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the No. 4 spot.
Emily Wendland and Sierra Wieneke teamed up to make quick work of their second doubles opponents. They won 6-1, 6-2. Kennedy Gonnerman and Brianna Jonason added a tough 6-4, 7-5 win from the No. 3 spot to close out a solid night.
