LUVERNE - The Big South Conference leading Luverne Cardinals received their first loss in the conference with an upset from Redwood.
The winning team was outshot in all three periods, but they capitalized on the opportunities that they had.
Sophomore Declan Beers put Luverne on the board with 5:22 left in the second period with assists by Nick Behrend and Nick Harder. LHS used that momentum to score less than a minute later with Jaxon Nelson and Chaz Smedsrud assisting Kasyn Kruse’s goal.
Luverne had 22 shots to Redwood’s nine, but Redwood managed to tack a fourth point onto its score in the middle period.
With Luverne desperately trying to come back in the final period, the shot count was low at both ends of the ice. Neither team scored until Smedsrud put one in the back of the net with less than two minutes remaining in the game. The home team had the momentum on its side, but couldn’t get another goal to tie the game.
Luverne has an overall record of 13-4 and is 9-1 in the Big South Conference. LHS will travel to Waseca tomorrow. Redwood Valley is 9-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
