Prep hockey: Luverne, Windom Area glide to victory

LUVERNE - After the first period the game was knotted up at one apiece, but five goals in the second period pushed Luverne to a 7-2 nonconference victory.
Jaxon Nelson started the scoring early in the first period on an assist from senior Chaz Smedsrud. Eight minutes later the Cardinals of Willmar answered with a goal of their own from Grant Duininck.
In the second period, Nelson scored four goals. Chaz Smedsrud added a goal of his own. The forward got his goal five minutes into the period off an assist from Nelson and Jim Erickson. Eli Slagter scored Willmar’s final goal midway through the second.
In the final period Nelson topped off a great night scoring Luverne’s goal on a shorthanded play. Nelson finished the night with six goals and one assist, giving him 13 goals in less than 24 hours including Friday night’s seven-goal showing against New Ulm.
Luverne advances to 12-3 on the season and will look to improve its record Thursday at Redwood Valley.

Windom Area 7, Morris/Benson 0
WINDOM - The Windom Eagles dominated the Morris/Benson Storm Saturday night. Devin Nielsen had a great night, finishing with four goals and one assist.
Nielsen got the scoring started one minute into the first period. The senior forward scored off an assist from Isaac Paulson and Ethan Becker. Nielsen had two more goals in the first period along with scores from David Volk and Paulson.
Paulson also played great for the Eagles. The junior forward finished with four assists and one goal.
In the second period the Storm defense slowed Windom’s offense down a little, but the Eagles managed to get two goals. Nielsen scored midway through the period on a power play. The goal was assisted by Zach Steen and Paulson. Less than a minute later, Steen got the Eagles’ seventh and final goal.
Both defenses clamped down in the final period and allowed no goals.
Windom advances to 5-10 with the win and will look to pick up another victory tonight in Marshall.

Girls
Luverne 5, Prairie Centre 1
SAUK CENTRE - Luverne got out-shot 25-23 but came out with the victory over Prairie Centre Saturday night.
Prairie Centre struck first late in the first period on a Gabby Olsen goal. However, a little more than four minutes later Luverne tied things up at one apeice. Madisyn Dingmann scored a nice goal off a Makayla Sterrett assist.
Things didn’t stay that way for long. Luverne scored three goals in the second period to extend its lead to 4-1. Dingmann scored two more times that period and Mariah Aukes scored an unassisted goal with eight minutes remaining in the period.
Late in the third period, Madi Oye extended Luverne’s lead to 5-1. Oye’s goal was assisted by Mariah Aukes.
Luverne advances to 14-5 on the season and will face St. Peter/L-H/TCU Friday in LeSueur.
