WINDOM - The Worthington boys hockey team played right with Windom Area Thursday night.
But in the end, the Eagles were too much in a 5-3 victory.
“It was a really good game to watch,” Worthington head coach Paul Olsen said.
Nathan Patten scored a first-period goal for the Trojans, who scored one goal in each period. Andrew Johnson had the assist.
Johnson found the net himself in the second period on an assist from Alex Kremer.
Nick Newman scored the third Trojan goal with Johnson and Tony Lopez assisting.
“We’re getting better,” Olsen said. “We put together a good two and a half or three periods. We probably played the best defensive game we’ve played all year.
“The kids are excited about what’s going to happen when we break through that ceiling.”
Windom Area was led by Alex Leopold, who scored two goals. Curtis Pell scored the Eagle’s first goal, with Devin Nielsen and Jack Mellstrom each scoring a goal.
The Eagles, who outshot WHS 29-24, host St. Peter on Saturday. The Trojans are at Waseca on Tuesday.

LUVERNE - Andrew Verhey and Kasyn Kruse each scored twice as the Luverne Cardinals defeated the Redwood Valley Cardinals.
Kruse scored the first goal of the game with assists from Joe Sommers and Chaz Smedsrud. Nick Behrend scored the second goal with a Sommers assist. Jaxon Nelson scored the third goal of the first period with Kruse assisting.
Jake Aukes scored in the second period with Kruse assisting.
Verhey scored twice in the third period with Smedsrud and Nelson assisting on the first and Smedsrud assisting on the second. Kruse finished the scoring for Luverne with assists from Behrend and Chris Jelken.
Connor Crabtree made 13 saves for Luverne.

WINDOM - Molly Boyum scored two goals as Windom Area defeated Worthington Thursday night.
Boyum scored a goal in the second period and added on in the third for the Eagles.
Windom had 36 shots on goal, and was only able to sneak two past WHS goalie Bailey Kruse.
“She played spectacular again,” WHS head coach Eric Milbrath said of his ninth-grade goalie. “She made some big, big saves.”
The Trojans, meanwhile, had a few good scoring opportunities, but weren’t able to get any of their 13 shots past ninth-grader Emily Steen.
“They have a very good goalie,” Milbrath said. “She made some very good saves for them.”
While the score was close, Milbrath said they had many missed opportunities.
“We didn’t play up to part in any period,” he said. “But we did play a pretty good third period.”
The Trojans are at Waseca Tuesday. Windom Area hosts St. Peter Saturday.
