MARSHALL -- The Luverne Cardinals girls' tennis team improved to 8-3 on the season after a 5-2 win over Marshall Tuesday in Marshall.
"We survived the heat and the wind to beat a good Marshall team," Cardinals coach Greg Antoine said.
In No. 1 singles, Kaitlin Wohnoutka of Luverne took down Julia Hartmann 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4. Marshall got one of their two wins in No. 2 singles, where Brooke Louwagie defeated Emily Robinson 6-2, 6-1.
"They have a foreign exchange student at No. 1 singles and so their whole team got to move down 1 level and that just makes you a little bit better," Antoine said. "Kaitlin played a long match with Julia and really showed how competitive she really can be. She really wanted that third set and did everything she could and made it happen."
In No. 3 singles, Luverne's Katie Eeten beat Jenna Gannott 6-4, 6-3, while the Cardinals No. 4 singles player, Emilee Johnson, took down Anja Baumgam 6-2, 6-0.

"Katie and Emilee played well at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to get us a couple of points," Antoine said. "Emily Robinson ran into a strong 2 singles that has been on their varsity for what seems like 10 years."
The Cardinals lost only one of their doubles matches, with No. 2 doubles going to Marshall in three sets.
At No. 1 doubles, Paige Adams and Kynzie Smedsrud of Luverne defeated Maddie Schoephoerster and Maggie Roy 6-2, 6-2.
"Paige and Kynzie continue to roll on," Antoine said. "They haven't lost since the very first match of the year against USC. They continue to be aggressive and really stay in every point."
Annie Samuelson and Brittany Soupir of Marshall took down Luverne's Brianna Erickson and Lexi Severtson 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles.
"Brianna and Lexi played a very good first set and then just couldn't get over the hump to win another set," Antoine said.
Finally, Cardinals No. 3 doubles team of McKenzie Wenninger and Tatiana Gust beat Crista Schultze and Rachel Landmark 6-3, 6-3.
"McKenzie and Tatiana looked good at 3rd doubles," Antoine said. "They were aggressive at the net and also chased down a lot of other balls to stay in the point."

The Cardinals travel to Brandon Valley Thursday for the annual Baseline Border Brawl.
