SLEEPY EYE -- In the first team dual of the season, the Worthington girls' tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to River Valley Thursday.
"We played good (Thursday)," Worthington coach Mike Marquardt said. "But we need a little more work on serving, footwork and finishing points. I was pleased with our groundstrokes and mental game."
At No. 1 singles, Worthington's Sameera Nalla suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Melissa Tauer.
Worthington's Sabrina Klein lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to Shelley Roiger, while Trojan Kate Lesnar lost 6-0, 6-1 to Stef Havemeier.
At No. 4 singles, Worthington's Emily Williamson lost 6-3, 6-1 to Becky Roiger

In doubles' competition, Amy Schutte and Jen Froderman lost 6-3, 6-1 to Annie Holkesvig and Brenna Davidson.
At No. 2 doubles, Annie Zaske and Maggie Fornoff lost 6-2, 6-3 to Bridget Mathiowetz and Kristina Busch.
Worthington's Elizabeth Luke and Brianna Kempema suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Amanda Holkesvig and Stacia Briard.
In extra matches, Ashley Jansma lost a 6-0, 6-0 decision, while Amanda Bristow and Jocie MacDonald lost 6-0, 6-0 in a doubles match.
Worthington will travel to Fairmont today.
Luverne finishes 2-1 in doubles' tournament
ST. JAMES -- Playing three separate matches consisting of eight doubles teams, the Luverne girls' tennis team defeated Sibley East (5-3) and Maple River (6-2) but lost to St. James (6-2) to finish 2-1 on the day.
"It is a good tournament to give everyone some doubles matches, especially the girls who will be playing singles the rest of the year," Luverne head coach Greg Antoine said.

"We are really playing quite well right now. There are still some parts of the game we need to work on, such as keeping racquets up at the net and being ready for every return, just to mention a few."
Against Sibley East, Luverne's Autumn Wenzel and Hilary Deragisch lost 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1.
At No. 2, Luverne's Krista Van Dyk and Paige Pierce lost 6-1, 6-1. However, Luverne's Cathryn Hartz and Hannah Baartman won 6-7 (4-7 tiebreaker), 7-6 (11-9) and 11-9 in the super tiebreaker third set.
Erin Doherty and Erica Marshall lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4, but Erin Fick and Tressa Ykema won 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 at No. 5.
Kaitlin Wohnoutka and Emily Robinson (6-0, 6-0) and Alyssa Frakes and Haley Boltjes (6-0, 6-1) each won for the Cardinals.
Katie Eeten and Emilee Johnson suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss at No. 8.
Against St. James, Wohnoutka and Robinson earned 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 6.
Eeten and Johnson also picked up a win, earning a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 8.

Hartz and Baartman won in thrilling fashion at No. 3 against Maple River. The Cardinal duo won 6-1, 4-6, 12-10.
Doherty and Marshall picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4, while Fick and Ykema won 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 10-8 at No. 5.
Wohnoutka and Robinson won their third match of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while Frakes and Boltjes earned a 7-6 (9-7) 6-1 victory at No. 7.
Eeten and Johnson finished their day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 8.
Luverne will travel to Fairmont today.
