CANBY - Monday’s nonconference match between Worthington and Canby couldn’t have been much closer.
It didn’t go five sets - as the Trojans’ previous two non-tournament matches had - but it went four; and all them were decided by five or fewer points.
“We had a strong start but went through a little bit of a lull in both games one and two,” Trojans coach Jessica Hogan said. “But we showed that fight the whole way in sets three and four. Our effort was outstanding. We just came up a little bit short.”
The Lancers won a narrow 25-23 first game and went up 2-0 with another tight 25-20 victory. Worthington fought back, taking the third set 25-20 to keep hope alive. It fought tooth and nail to extend the match to five games, but the home team was able to escape with a slim 25-23 triumph.
Emma Gerber finished the game with 20 kills, six blocks and three ace serves for the Trojans. Allie Bruns and Abbi Mulder added seven and five kills, respectively. Anneke Weg ended the night with 32 set assists and six digs. Emily Shaffer and Mulder had five blocks each. Jasmine Williams scooped up a team-high 13 digs with Paige Heidebrink tallying six. Maddi Woll went 15-for-15 with nine points at the service line while Olivia Petersen went 20-for-21 with 13 points and two aces.
Worthington (8-9 overall, 1-2 Big South Conference) will be on the road at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Luverne. The Cardinals are currently 7-10 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
