Prep volleyball: Luverne tops WHS; Gunderson, Morrow set marks for H-LP

LUVERNE - In a Southwest Conference volleyball match Thursday night in Luverne, it took five long sets to decide a winner. And when it did, the Luverne Cardinals finished on top of the Worthington Trojans.
Set scores were 25-22, 20-25, 11-25, 25-16 and 15-10.
Lexi Rust and Paige Baker each had three aces for the Cardinals, going 22-24 and 21-22, respectively. Erica DeBoer had 32 digs and Rust had 30. Cardinal setter Ashley Olson had 28 set assists.
Seniors Amanda Barnhart and Ellen Dahl had seven solo blocks apiece. Dahl led the Cards with 12 kills, and Barnhart and DeBoer each had seven.
For Worthington, Paige Gravenhof had 18 digs and 23 set assists. Brooke Henning also had 18 digs, and tacked on 17 kills. Both Becca Linder and Tracy Prins had seven kills apiece. Libero Abbie Landgaard had 19 digs.
“Give credit to Luverne, They really played well, their serve receive was really on,” Worthington head coach Jessica Hogan said. “We were constantly on our heels, thanks to the way Luverne was playing us.”
Luverne is now 7-5-2.
H-LP 3, CC-E 1
ROYAL, Iowa-Two Harris-Lake Park players set individual school records en route to a 3-1 victory over Clay Central- Everly, with set scores of 25-13 25-20, 24-26 and 25-18.
Seniors Macy Gunderson and Noreen Morrow were the record setters. Gunderson finished Thursday’s match with 50 set assists, and Morrow finished the match with 31 kills.
Grace Winter had 22 digs for the Wolves, closely followed by Miranda Brueggeman, who had 20. Outside hitter Katherine Ihnen had 10 kills on the evening, also tallying five digs and one block assist.
SWU 3, Fulda 0
FULDA - The struggling Fulda Raiders were unable yet again to find a win after being swept by Southwestern United in Fulda.
Set scores were 25-13, 25-17 and 25-13.
Courtney Place blasted 15 kills for the Wildcats. Place was also 16-18 from behind the line, adding three aces. Outside hitter Autumn Hinkeldey was 18-19 with two aces on the night. Wildcat setter Haley Schumacher totaled 23 set assists. Place also had seven blocks against the Raiders.
Fulda’s Courtney Tiesler had six kills, followed by Myah Holinka, who finished with five.
Fulda’s setter Randi Tiesler had 12 set assists, and Courtney Tiesler had 11 digs.
Fulda is now 0-8 in the year, and SWU is now 5-0 in the conference, and 9-4 overall.
RRC 3, SWC 1
EDGERTON - It took four games for Red Rock Central to overcome Southwest Christian in Edgerton.
Set scores were 25-19, 18-25, 27-25 and 27-25.
For the Falcons, Olivia Bitner finished with 13 kills, three blocks, and 19 digs. Bitner also went 16-for-17 serving with two aces. Outside hitter Cassidy Erickson had 22 digs and 9 kills, and setter Mikaela Smith had 34 set assists.
For SWC, Kassydi Vreeman was 19-20 from behind the line, with two aces. She also totaled 10 kills and 35 digs. Brooke Mouw had 13 kills, and Tianna Top had six solo blocks. Sydney Esselink had 41 set assists.
MLA 3, Adrian 1
ADRIAN-After winning the first set, the Adrian Dragons lost to Mountain Lake Area 3-1.
Set scores were 23-25, 25-14, 25-23 and 25-23.
Outside hitter Elizabeth Thier led the Dragons with 13 kills, followed closely by Corie Reckamp, who finished with 11. Setter Sydnie Weiss had 34 set assists. There were plenty of digs to share, as libero Christina Loonan had 39, Thier had 31 and Shelly Loosbrock had 26.
Nicole Knips and Thier each had four blocks, and Weiss and Thier each had an ace serve.
The Dragons are now 1-3 in conference action.
Marshall 3, Windom 0
MARSHALL - Kenzie Beekman drilled 16 kills and put 20 of 21 serves in play to lead Marshall to a 3-0 victory over Southwest Conference opponent Windom Area. Sydney Griffin had eight kills and Callie Graff seven kills to aid the Tigers’ effort.
Griffin was 10-for-12 with two ace serves and also had 12 digs.
Miki Bolin was 11-for-13 with two service aces for Windom Area. Rachel Sorensen had six kills while Kelsey Hanefeld and Megan Theesfeld each had five.
Alyssa Fast recorded 18 digs.
H-BC 3, Ellsworth 1
ELLSWORTH - Kelli Esselink had six kills and Madison Fick added five as Hills-Beaver Creek went four games to defeat host Ellsworth.
Game scores were 26-24, 18-25, 25-22 and 25-21.
Jessica Sandbulte put 16 of 16 serves in play for Hills-Beaver Creek, which advanced to 3-7 with the victory. Teammates Kayla Thone was 9-for-9 and Taylor Wingert 13-for-14.
For Ellsworth, Lexi Huisman had 10 kills and three ace serves. Emily Chapa had six kills and two blocks. Hannah Mulder contributed five digs and Heidi Nolte seven set assists.
The Panthers are 2-7 on the season.
W-WG 3, Edgerton 0
EDGERTON-The Westbrook- Walnut Grove Chargers added another “W” in the conference standings, as they swept Edgerton on their home court with set scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-12.
Madison Takle led the Charger serving, going 18-18 with two aces. With four aces, Abby Herding followed closely behind, with a perfect 15-for-15 from behind the line.
Dayna Comnick was W-WG’s leading attacker, finishing the match with 16 kills, followed by Cassidy Mischke with 10. Liz Woelber and Mischke each had 12 digs for the Chargers. Herding also tagged on 29 set assists.
For the Flying Dutchmen, Kaitlin VanRuler was a perfect 7 of 7 from behind the line, followed by Cody Bouw, who was 6-8. Jordyn Smit totaled six assists, and Kjersten Sankey has seven digs.
Edgerton plays in the RTR Invitational Saturday, and Westbrook-Walnut Grove plays in Wabasso on Monday.
