PREP VOLLEYBALL: Windom wins Mankato tourney

MANKATO -- The Windom volleyball team was a perfect 5-0 Saturday, winning the title in a 16-team tournament.

The Eagles (8-1) defeated Austin 25-15, Worthington 25-12, 25-8 and Sibley East 25-13, 25-16 in pool play to advance to the Gold playoffs.

Windom then defeated NRHEG 25-13, 21-25, 15-13 to advance to the finals.

Playing Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, Windom lost the first game, 25-13 before winning the final two, 25-22 and 15-9 to claim the championship.

The Trojans, meanwhile, finished seventh.

In pool play, they defeated Sibley East 25-20, 25-22 and Austin 25-12, 25-18.

Worthington lost to Mankato East 25-14, 25-20 and defeated Maple River 26-24, 23-25, 15-11 in the playoffs.

Martha Alwal had 39 kills, four blocks and was 41-for-48 serving with nine aces to lead Worthington (6-2).

Kristen Andersen had 25 kills, 23 digs and three blocks, while Taylor Heidebrink had 16 kills, 24 digs, three blocks and 43 set assists for WHS.

Meagan Meier added 34 set assists, while Megan Juber had 11 kills, 27 digs and was 39-for-43 serving.

Mackenzie Gerber had eight kills and two blocks, while Samantha Thuringer was 28-for-32 serving for the Trojans, who travel to Red Rock Central tonight and host Luverne on Thursday.

Courtney Ysker had 52 kills and 39 digs to lead Windom, while Amber Eigenberg had 24 kills. Holly Larson (16) and Abby Hayenga (15) also contributed to the Windom attack.

Hayenga led the Eagles with 62 set assists, while Kaitlin Markl had 37.

Larson had 14 blocks, while Hayenga added 10 for Windom, while Amber Sebring had 35 digs.

At the service line, Hali Tasler was 47-for-48 with 14 aces, while Hayenga was 34-for-35 with five aces. Ysker added 11 aces for Windom, which will host Marshall on Thursday.

SSC competes in SW MN Challenge

MARSHALL -- The Southwest Star Concept volleyball team suffered two losses on Friday and was 1-2 on Saturday to place 28th in the Southwest Minnesota Challenge Tournament.

On Friday, SSC lost to Marshall 25-16, 25-14 and Woodbury 25-16, 25-14.

Saturday, the Quasars defeated Lincoln HI 25-16, 25-12 before losing to West Fargo, 25-12, 25-20 and Holy Family Catholic, 27-25, 25-21.

Katey Granstra had 28 kills to lead the Quasars, while Jen Schmidt had 18 kills and Courtney Place added 11.

Maddie Rasche led the SSC defense with 21 digs, while Kelli Schmitz had 31 set assists and Mandy Henkels added 15.

At the service line, Kelli Schmitz had 22 points and Place had 14.

SSC (2-5) will travel to Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin on Thursday.

W-WG wins own tournament

WESTBROOK -- After an opening-round loss to Fulda, Westbrook-Walnut Grove won its next three matches to win its own tournament.

Red Rock Central was second, Lakeview was third, Fulda claimed fourth and Adrian was fifth in the tournament.

Fulda earned a 19-25, 25-20, 15-6 win against W-WG to open the tournament, before W-WG rallied with a 25-20, 19-25, 15-12 victory against RRC.

Adrian, meanwhile, lost to Lakeview, 15-25, 25-23, 15-9.

The Chargers then defeated Lakeview 25-14, 27-25 and Adrian 25-11, 25-23.

RRC beat Lakeview 25-20, 25-16 and Adrian beat Fulda 18-25, 25-18, 15-9.

RRC also beat Fulda 24-26, 25-20, 15-5 and Adrian 25-15, 25-20. Lakeview then edged the Raiders 25-13, 27-25.

For W-WG, Anne Woelber was 70-for-74 serving with eight aces and 47 points. She also had 76 set assists.

Dayna Comnick was 32-for-35 serving with seven aces and 27 points.

Taylor Elzenga led W-WG (7-1) with 44 kills, while Comnick had 16 kills and five blocks. Chanel Madson added 11 kills.

Molly Jarmer led the Chargers with 89 digs, while Madson had 39 and Amber West had 21.

W-WG will host Fulda on Thursday.
