CANBY- Worthington earned a win on the volleyball hardwood Monday night, winning 3-1 over Canby on the road.
Worthington won the match in four sets, with scores going 27-25, 26-28, 25-15, and 25-16.
The Trojans traded the first two sets, but WHS coach Jessica Hogan said a cleaned-up effort down the stretch is what earned her team the four set win.
“We came out strong and Canby did a nice job in the second set,” Hogan said. “We kept our composure and, in the third and fourth sets, we eliminated our errors and played a lot cleaner and served a lot tougher.”
The Trojans garnered 17 kills for the set from senior Brooke Henning, and she hit the deck to lead the team defensively with 22 digs, too. Paige Gravenhof, also a senior, led the team from the service line with an 18-of-19 effort and a trio of aces. She orchestrated Worthington’s offense to the tune of 21 assists while junior Betsy Thompson set up 10 of the team’s kills. Gravenhof collected 20 digs on the night, while senior Abbie Landgaard had 17 digs.
At the net, the Trojans earned three blocks apiece from senior Becca Linder and sophomore Allie Bruns. Bruns added nine kills to Henning’s team-leading efforts while Landgaard had eight. Landgaard and senior Paige Kinley each chipped in a couple of aces.
Worthington returns to the court tonight, at Jackson County Central. The Huskies sat at 13-4 heading into their match on Monday night with New Ulm. Worthington is now even at 10-10 on the year.
Luverne 3, Edgerton 0
EDGERTON - The Cardinals from Luverne swept Edgerton on Monday night to notch their fifth win of the season. Set scores went 26-24, 25-13, and 25-19 as Luverne now sits at 5-6.
Luverne senior Lexi Rust had two aces for the match as did Ashley Olson. Ellen Dahl had a dozen kills at the net while Rust added nine and sophomore Nicole Kneip had six.
The Caridinals hit the deck to secure the sweep defensively, as senior Erica DeBoer had 26 digs for the night and Dahl had 21. Olson had 11 assists and Amanda Barnhart and Kneip paired up to combine for four solo blocks and eight assists.
Edgerton finished the night with junior Tanner Gunnink’s six kills. Sophomore Mia Wassink had four kills and four blocks while junior Kjersten Sankey had six digs. Mandie Petersen was 10-for-10 from the service line with six digs for the Flying Dutchmen, while freshman Jordyn Smit was 10-for-11 on the match.
Edgerton travels to Hills tonight for a match with Hills-Beaver Creek and Luverne will be at home against Redwood Valley.
SWC 3, Ellsworth 0
ELLSWORTH - Southwest Christian downed Ellsworth in straight sets in a Red Rock Conference match at Ellsworth.
Set scores were in SWC’s favor 25-11, 25-10, and 25-9.
Southwest junior Tianna Top led her team offensively at the net with 13 kills for the set, while sophomore Ann Pater chipped in seven. Pater also finished with a spotless night from the service line, going 14-for-14 with four aces. SWC junior setter Sydney Esselink finished with 27 assists for the night and had two aces.
The Eagles were led defensively with 16 kills from sophomore Hope Veldkamp while Pater dug up 14.
Ellsworth had four kills for the night from senior Emily Chapa and two aces apiece from Brenna Kramer and Alexa Huisman. Danielle DeBeer set up the offense to the tune of four set assists while, defensively, the Panthers had four digs from senior Heidi Nolte.
Ellsworth hosts Westbrook-Walnut Grove tonight, while SWC will bring Mountain Lake to town.
SWU 3, H-LP 0
LAKE PARK - Southwestern United trekked across the border and earned a big sweep over Harris-Lake Park. Set scores swung SWU’s way 25-15, 25-16, and 25-18.
Courtney Place led SWU with 20 kills while junior Kailey Wendland chimed in with five kills, as did sophomore Andrea Hinkeldey. From the service line, the Wildcats had three aces from an 18-of-19 effortfor Rachel Mathias, and senior Autumn Hinkeldey’s 15-for-15 night was good for one ace. SWU sophomore Hailey Schumacher set up the offense with 27 assists.
For H-LP, the Wolves had 10 kills from senior Noreen Morrow, while senior Macy Gunderson had 21 assists to help run the offensive attack. Gunderson led the team with a dozen digs.
H-LP will host C-W-L, Corwith next, on Thursday night in Lake Park. Southwestern United gets set for a match tonight in Jeffers against Red Rock Central.
