Hartquist, Van Maanen, Drent lead area golfers at state tournaments

Henry Hartquist of Luverne finished 12th overall in the Minnesota state high school Class AA golf tournament Wednesday at Ridges at Sand Creek. Sawyer Drent of Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove placed 29th in the Class A tournament at Pebble Creek, and Tess Van Maanen of Hills-Beaver Creek was 25th for the girls in Class A.

Murray County Central, competing in the team portion of the girls Class A tourney, finished seventh out of the eight teams entered. The Rebels carded a 450 on the first day of competition Tuesday, but rallied with a 417 on Wednesday for an 867 total.

Legacy Christian Academy was the overall girls Class A winner with 716 strokes, followed by Lac qui Parle Valley 723, Park Christian 741, Fillmore Central 778, North Woods 791, Fertile-Beltrami 828, MCC, and Sleepy Eye 875.

Fertile-Beltrami won the boys Class A competition with a 632. Marshall School had 662, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 680, Lakeview 682, Park Christian 702, United South Central 703, New Life Academy 714 and Rushford-Peterson 757.

Drent carded identical rounds of 83 and 83 for 166 in the boys Class A field. Brock Henning of Adrian/Ellsworth finished 37th with 89 and 83 for 172.


Van Maanen came in with rounds of 96 and 96 for 192 total strokes. Brielle Vis of Southwest Christian/Edgerton finished 27th with a 193. Ellyson Bang of HL-O/F/W-WG was 28th with 194. Murray County Central’s girls were led by Cierra Tutt with a 197, 32nd overall. Other MCC scores were: Ellie Meyer (58th) 212, Ava Johnson (74th) 228, Rachel Huso (76th) 230, Simone Harms (79th) 251, and Lizzie Daniels (85th) 266.

Cole Witherow of New Life Academy was the overall boys Class A winner with a 146. For the girls, Emily Brandt of Legacy Christian Academy won it all with a 165.

In the boys Class AA field, Hartquist shot a 152 total, producing rounds of 77 and 75. Braxton Thompson of Pipestone Area was 80th with a 180, shooting a 97 on the first day but a much better 83 on Wednesday.

Sam Udovich of St. Croix Lutheran was the boys Class AA medalist with a 142.
