The Jackson County Central Huskies won three matches at the state wrestling tournament on Thursday to capture the 2022 Class A title

ST. PAUL -- The deep and immensely talented Jackson County Central High School wrestling team left no doubt about who’s the boss in the Minnesota Class A field on Thursday, winning a state championship by virtue of three solid victories at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Huskies -- the top seed in Class A -- opened the state team tourney with a 52-9 quarterfinal victory over Maple River. In the semifinals, West Central Area/Ashby-Brandon-Evansville got no extra consideration from the length of its name and lost to JCC 41-27. And in the finals, the Huskies defeated Royalton-Upsala 45-23 for the 2022 crown.

Jackson County Central thus won its first state championship since 2013. The Huskies captured seven titles from 1999 through 2013, and now they are back on top.

Thursday’s triumph was sweet. All season long, the Huskies felt the sting of a tough 2021 state tournament loss to Bertha-Hewitt on a tiebreaker -- when they gave up three falls in their last three matches.

This time, they left no doubt.
