Softball: E/SWC, Luverne hold their positions

The top-seeded Edgerton/Southwest Christian Flying Dutchmen and Luverne Cardinals are still in control of their section high school softball tournaments after first- and second-round games played Tuesday.

Edgerton/Southwest Christian had a bye in the first round of the Section 3A tournament and watched as the fourth-seeded team in the south bracket, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, defeated No. 5 Murray County Central 4-1 in Edgerton Tuesday in the Rebels’ first game. Then the Dutchmen drilled MCC 17-2 in four innings to advance into Saturday action.

Paris Van Dyke was the winning pitcher, going the complete four innings allowing six hits with four strikeouts. She also did well at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Ana Veldkamp and Kathryn Prins each added two hits. Veldkamp and Makenna Moss drove in two runs each. Catcher Brenalyn Smit hit a solo home run in the third inning. Veldkamp and pinch runner Avery Fey both scored three runs.

Pitcher Margaret Dolan, who had two hits and drove in a run from the batter’s box, took the loss for T-M-B.

No. 1 south bracket seed Edgerton/Southwest Christian will play Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Saturday in the next round, at the Marshall Softball Complex, beginning at 11 a.m. KMS, the No. 2 seed from the north, beat Yellow Medicine East 4-3 in its second game on Tuesday. R-T-R will take on Lac qui Parle Valley in Marshall at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the other winners bracket game.

The 11 a.m. winners bracket winners play again at 3 p.m. Saturday for a berth in the championship June 2.

In other first-round south games Tuesday, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (2) topped Lakeview (7) 12-2, and Wabasso (3) beat Adrian/Ellsworth 12-2. In a second-round game, R-T-R defeated Wabasso 9-1.

In elimination bracket games Saturday in Marshall, T-M-B plays Yellow Medicine East and Benson plays Wabasso in 1 p.m. starts.

The top-seeded team in the south half of Section 3AA, Luverne had a first-round bye on Tuesday as Windom Area (4) edged Minneota/Canby 2-1. In the second round, Luverne outplayed Windom Area 11-6.

The Cardinals await a Saturday contest against Dassel-Cokato at 11 a.m. at the Marshall Softball Complex. Dassel-Cokato, the No. 2 seed from the north, topped Litchfield 4-1 in the second round on Tuesday. In the other winners bracket game at 11 a.m., Pipestone Area (2) will play Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, the top-seeded team from the north.

The winners from Saturday’s winners bracket play again at 3 p.m. Saturday for a berth in the championship June 2.

In other south section first-round games Tuesday, Pipestone Area (2) blanked Redwood Valley (7) 10-0 and Jackson County Central (3) beat Renville County West/BOLD (6) 10-0. In a second-round game, Pipestone Area edged JCC 5-3.

In elimination bracket games Saturday in Marshall, Windom Area plays Litchfield and West Central plays Jackson County Central in 1 p.m. starts.
