MANKATO -- The seventh seed was unable to knock off the second seed in the quarterfinal round of the Section 2AAA girls basketball tournament Tuesday night, but it was a pretty good game.

Mankato West defeated the Worthington Trojans 60-45, ending the Trojans’ season.

“The totals were pretty good for us. I think the difference was they shot the ball for a better percentage,” said WHS head coach Eric Lindner.

“They got out to a lead and we kind of wore them down a bit, and came within nine at half,” he said.

But the Scarlets got off to a good start in the second half, and Worthington couldn’t come back despite committing only 13 turnovers in the game.

Maya Scheitel-Taylor led Worthington with 14 points. Payton Sauerbrei had seven points. Evelyn Othow, Olivia Hayenga and Sophie Wiertzema all had five points, with Wiertzema getting six rebounds.

Tuesday’s game was the final game of Othow’s career. She was an impressive player for the Trojans, but the only player from the team who graduates.
