MARSHALL -- The Luverne Cardinals baseball team was beaten by Paynesville, 5-0, Saturday in the semifinals of the Section 3AA baseball tournament.

The win puts Paynesville in the title game. Luverne will play Fairmont Tuesday in Jackson for the right to face Paynesville Thursday for a state tournament berth. Tuesday's game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Against Paynesville, Luverne gathered just four hits off pitcher Grady Fuchs. The Bulldogs scored once in the second inning and added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Only one of those runs was earned.

Jake Haugen started and threw five innings for the Cardinals, and Isaiah Bartels finished up.

Gaige Nath went 2-for-3 for LHS at the plate and teammate Colby Crabtree had one hit, a double.
