THE GLOBE
BUFFALO LAKE -- The goal was to place in the top five to advance to the finals of the Section 3AA golf tournament.
And the Worthington Trojan girls did just that on Wednesday, placing fifth as a team at the Oakdale Country Club.
That’s not an easy task when you bring just four competitors to such a competitive event, but the Trojans hit the mark with Anneke Weg, Bailey Weg, Maggie Putnam and Claire Ludes. Anneke carded an 84 which was good to place her in a tie for sixth place. Bailey carded a 95, Putnam a 97 and Ludes a 103.

“They should be proud of themselves. But we still have 18 holes to go, so we have to improve on what we did today,” said WHS coach Paul Barduson, who seemed as proud as any of his golfers when he considered the Trojans had little leeway in the tournament.
“Especially having only four on the varsity, we have to have all scores count. They all hit their numbers or improved on it today,” Barduson said.
The Section 3AA finals are Tuesday, again at Oakdale. The Worthington boys play their first-round sectional meet on Thursday (May 24).
Marshall finished with a first-place 318 for the girls on Wednesday. Minnewaska was second with 329 strokes, followed by Fairmont with 368, Litchfield 375 and Worthington 379. There were 14 teams in the meet.
Pipestone Area tied for seventh with 386 strokes. Luverne and Windom Area tied for ninth at 391, and Jackson County Central was 14th with 414.
Other area girls advancing to the finals are Emma Budden of Pipestone Area (85), Hannah Ver Steeg of Luverne (86), and Paige Pigman of Windom Area (87).
