FAIRMONT -- With four matches remaining in the Worthington Trojans’ Section 3AA team wrestling quarterfinal Thursday night at Fairmont High School, New Ulm led 26-18.
But in the end, Worthington prevailed 42-26 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
WHS 182-pounder Mason Byrne won by forfeit. Jacob Neuberger won by fall in just 51 seconds over Julian Hernandez at 195, Marcos Herrera pinned his Eagles rival, Colby Wenniger, in just 3:51 at 220, and 285-pounder Adam Russell won by forfeit.
There were several tight matches, and New Ulm -- the No. 3 seed in the south -- won its share against the second-seeded Trojans.
The Eagles were already leading, 20-15, after the 145-pound match when Hunter Ranweiler edged Worthington’s Jaime Cornejo 2-0 at 152. Ranweiler got his takedown with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter and made it hold up through the full three periods.
Next up, at 160, Worthington’s Brayden Donkersloot and New Ulm’s Tanner Stark locked horns in a back-and-forth tussle highlighted by a scoring discrepancy. Donkersloot scored an almost immediate takedown on Stark, but the Eagle fought back to lead 5-3 at the end of the first period. A takedown and near fall points put Donkersloot ahead (it seemed) 8-6, and that was the score going into the third period until a discussion at the scorer’s table changed it to 7-7.
With the score corrected, Stark rode Donkersloot in the third period until the Trojan gained an escape with 45 seconds remaining. Both were standing after that, but Stark needed an injury time-out due to a sore ankle. He returned, didn’t get the takedown he needed, and was carried off the mat by his coach when the bout ended.
New Ulm got an overtime win at 170, however, when Lane Miller outlasted Worthington’s Kyle Mullaney. Miller scored on Mullaney with 10.8 seconds remaining in the one-minute overtime to break the 4-4 deadlock.
WHS head coach Mark Prunty was pleased at the final result.
“New Ulm, we know, is a very dangerous team. They match up well with us,” he said.
Worthington started well, getting a fall from 106-pounder Damon Schutz. New Ulm won the next two matches, the first by a decision and the second via fall, but the Trojans recovered at 126 pounds with a 10-4 decision by Erik Artiga.
At 132 pounds, the Trojans’ state-ranked senior, Jacob Prunty, was matched against a female opponent, New Ulm senior Rebekah Hoppe. She lasted until 27 seconds remained in the first period.
New Ulm’s Cole Ranweiler got a 55-second pin over Worthington’s Lay K Paw at 138 pounds, and teammate Sean Howk got a technical fall at 145.
In other Section 3AA competition Thursday in Fairmont, Luverne beat Fairmont/Martin County West 36-18 in the early bout, then was shut out by F/MCW 76-0 in the quarterfinals.
On Saturday, the Section 3AA brackets flip. Worthington will wrestle the north section’s top seed, Marshall, in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. in Marshall. On the other side, the No. 1 south seed, Fairmont/Martin County West, will face Redwood River Valley, also at 12:30 in Marshall. Winners square off at 2 p.m. in Marshall for a state tournament berth.
Marshall defeated Worthington 39-25 in a dual meet on Jan. 11. Coach Prunty, however, says his Trojans are feeling good and hoping for the best.
“We’re as healthy as we’ve been. We’re giving ourselves a chance,” he said.
