Section baseball, softball tournaments are about to begin

The big tournaments for area high school baseball and softball teams are getting set. That means it’s time for double-elimination sectionals all over the southwest Minnesota landscape.

That means it’s time for double-elimination sectionals all over the southwest Minnesota landscape.

A look ahead:

In Section 3AA baseball, as expected, the Luverne Cardinals have drawn the No. 1 seed in the south. The Cards, of veteran head coach Mike Wenninger, enjoy a first-round by as other south bracket teams begin competition on Saturday (May 29).

In a noon game in Luverne, fifth-seeded Windom Area takes on fourth-seeded Pipestone Area for the right to play Luverne at 2 p.m. on the same day. Other first-round Saturday games have Fairmont (2) playing Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (7) at 11 a.m. in Fairmont and St. James Area (6) playing Jackson County Central (3) at 1 p.m. in Fairmont, with the winners playing again at 3:30 in Fairmont.

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City is the top-seeded team in the north.

In Section 3A baseball, Wabasso is the top seed and will take on eighth-seeded Lakeview on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Wabasso. Other first-round Saturday games are Murray County Central (5) playing Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove (4) at 1 p.m. in Wabasso, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (2) playing Edgerton/Southwest Christian (7) at 11 a.m. in Ruthton, and Adrian/Ellsworth (6) playing Minneota (3) at 1 p.m. in Ruthton.

Winners play again on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Wabasso and Ruthton.

In Section 2A baseball, ninth-seeded Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda opens Saturday against eighth-seeded Cleveland at 11 a.m. in Cleveland.

The Section 2AAA tournament, featuring the Worthington Trojans, has yet to be seeded.

In softball, sections 3A and 3AA are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 1. The Trojans, in 2AAA, are scheduled for a June 3 opening date.

In Section 3AA, the south’s top seed, Pipestone Area, has a first-round bye. Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (5) plays Luverne (4) at 4 p.m. in Pipestone, St. James Area (2) plays Redwood Valley (7) at 3 p.m. in St. James, and Jackson County Central (6) plays Windom Area (3) at 4:30 p.m. in St. James. Winners play again Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Pipestone and St. James.

In the Section 3A south bracket, top-seeded Edgerton/Southwest Christian has a first-round bye. Murray County Central (5) opens against Red Rock Central (4) at 4 p.m. in Edgerton, Wabasso (2) plays Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at 3 p.m. in Wabasso, and Adrian/Ellsworth (6) plays Russell-Tyller-Ruthton (3) in Wabasso. The winners play again at 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Edgerton and Wabasso.
