SHAKOPEE - Six seniors finished their Worthington High School team tennis careers Tuesday in a 6-1 loss to Shakopee in the first round of the Section 2AA tournament.
Alicia Khatt, Laura Wetering, Makensie Carstensen, Miranda LeBrun, Rachel Drietz and Sarah Janssen battled with various success against the host Sabers. But the important thing, said head coach Mike Marquardt, was that they battled all the way.
“The seniors gave it all they had and walked off the courts with no regrets. A very proud moment,” he said.
Worthington’s only victory occurred at No. 1 doubles where Trojans Carstensen and Janssen locked up with Shakopee’s Serina Fischer and Jessica Svac in a three-set match. Carstensen and Janssen won the first set 6-2, lost the second 1-6, but won the third 6-3.
“A roller-coaster ride,” was how Marquardt described the contest.
At No. 2 doubles, Jamie Lindstrom and Abby Wondrasch defeated Worthington’s Annie Lesnar and Brianna Kempema 6-2, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, Shakopee’s Cindy Chesumbai and Kaitlyn Twardoski teamed up to beat the Trojans’ Khatt and LeBrun 6-3, 6-4.
Shakopee won all the singles matches in straight sets. Haley Lickfold defeated Emily Williamson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Taylor Koenen defeated Drietz 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Kayla Schmidt topped Wetering 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and Aashika Ramkumar beat Paige Stewart 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
In other matches, Worthington’s Shelby Larson lost 6-0, 6-2 to the Sabers’ Ali Kudrle and the Trojans’ Anna Kill lost 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 to Amber Kale.
