Section volleyball: HL-O/F, RRC, R-T-R, Windom, JCC post solid wins

South Sections 3A and 3AA high school volleyball teams competed in quarterfinal contests Friday night in gymnasiums around the area.

South Sections 3A and 3AA high school volleyball teams competed in quarterfinal contests Friday night in gymnasiums around the area.

It was Murray County Central vs. Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, Edgerton at Red Rock Central, Adrian/Ellsworth at Russell-Tyler-Ruthton and Southwest Christian at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in Section 3A. And in Section 3AA, St. James Area played Jackson County Central, Redwood Valley took on Windom Area, Montevideo played Pipestone Area and Fairmont competed against Luverne.

The sub-section semifinals are Monday, with the winners taking on the north winners in both sub-sections on Nov. 4.

HL-O/F 3, MCC 0

FULDA -- The south’s top seed got off to a slow start, but Heron Lake-Okabena/ Fulda was able to advance in straight sets over Murray Central, 25-20. 25-9, 25-19.

Ellie Bang was 18-for-18 serving with five aces, and she also had 31 set assists for the Coyotes. Taryn Evers had 10 kills, Sam Untiedt had 8, and Maddie Schumacher had 7.

Emma Rasche came up with 12 digs, and Anna Fest was 13-for-14 serving with four aces.

For MCC, Emily Rohrer had 14 kills, Kiana Felber 10 digs and Kate Slettum 23 set assists.

HL-O/F is 21-6 on the season.

RRC 3, Edgerton 0

LAMBERTON -- Red Rock Central, the fourth seed in the south, defeated fifth-seeded Edgerton Public on scores of 27-25, 25-13 and 26-24.

Lilly Stavnes and Josie Horning recorded 12 and 11 points serving, respectively, for the Falcons, and Nora Hemmingsen served for seven points.

Karli Arkell led the winners with 20 kills, and Horning added 12.

Arkell also had three blocks. Hemmingsen and Emily DeCock had 19 and 16 set assists, respectively.

Stavnes led the Falcons with 15 digs.

RRC will play HL-O/F in the sub-section semifinals Monday in Worthington.

R-T-R 3, Adrian/Ellsworth 0

TYLER -- Russell-Tyler-Ruthton eliminated Adrian / Ellsworth 25-18, 25-23 and 25-15.

Mayssa Tweet had 27 digs for A/E and teammate Hali Bullerman served for 100 percent, going 12-for-12.

Section 3AA

Windom Area 3, Redwood Valley 1

WINDOM -- Sophomore hitter Tristyn Maras put away 14 kills, put 20 of 20 serves in play for four aces, and also had eight digs as Windom Area dispatched Redwood Valley 25-12, 9-25, 25-21, 25-15.

Sydney Skarpohl had 10 kills for the Eagles. Jenna Veenker had 14 set assists and Makenna McNamara was close behind with 13.

Kendall Sammons had 13 digs and was 16-for-17 serving with one ace. Veenker was 11-for-11 serving with an ace. And Elliot Espenson had two solo and four block assists.

Windom Area awaits a Monday match with top-seeded Jackson County Central, which defeated eighth-seeded St. James Area on Friday.

JCC 3, St. James Area 0

JACKSON -- Sweeping St. James Area on scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-11, Jackson County Central improved its record to 24-6.

Sadie Voss had 10 kills and six digs, and was 14-for-16 serving with eight aces. Georgianna Wenzel had nine kills, was 8 of 9 serving for three aces, and had five digs.

Emma Haren, with eight kills, also had 10 digs. And Maci Farmer was credited with 33 set assists while going 16-for-18 from the service line for three aces.
