Sibley-Ocheyedan girls eclipse Sioux Center, 42-31

SIBLEY, Iowa -- Running out to a fast 7-0 first quarter lead, the Sibley-Ocheyedan High School girls basketball team sunk visiting Sioux Center 42-31 Tuesday night, winning its second game of the 2020-21 season in as many starts.

The Generals, who haven't had a winning season since 2013, looked like a team capable of winning a lot this winter. Sophomores Madison Brouwer and Bria Wasmund scored 18 and 10 points, respectably, to pace a squad that never trailed Tuesday against the Warriors. The S-O offense went into a scoring draught late in the first quarter and for most of the second quarter but still held their rivals at bay with strong defense. They scored often enough to keep Sioux Center 8 to 10 points in the rear-view mirror throughout the second half.

Sibley-Ocheyedan led 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, and with just two minutes to play before halftime they'd only scored two more points. But their 17-13 lead was bumped up to 24-15 at intermission as Wasmund drained a 3-point shot at the buzzer.

Sioux Center stepped up its defensive pressure in the third quarter, but the Generals were up to the task.

Peytan Toering led Sioux Center offensively with 12 points.
