OKOBOJI, Iowa — Though it wasn't their best shooting output of the season, the Sibley-Ocheyedan High School girls basketball team used favorable matchups down low and a strong defense to subdue Sioux Central 76-57 Friday night in the Iowa Class 2A, Region 3 finals in Okoboji.
The Generals will open state tournament action at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Tuesday against Regina Catholic.
S-O hit just one of 16 shots from 3-point range Friday, but got a very strong inside game from 6-1 senior Madison Brouwer, who finished with 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field. She also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Bria Wasmund scored 13 points with seven rebounds and nine assists. Marissa Ackerman had 15 points and Zoe Ackerman scored 12.
"We have confidence that we'll shoot better next game," said Sibley-Ocheyedan head coach Zach Wessels. "That was great that our girls did not let that detract from their game, and still have confidence."
The win pushed Sibley-Ocheyedan to 21-3 on the season while finishing Sioux Central's year at 17-7.
"We had matchups down low. We really had good spurts with our transition game," said Wessels.
Defensively, the Generals tried and mostly succeeded in taking Sioux Central out of what it wanted to do.
