Sioux City West surges in second half, beats Worthington 72-50 in girls basketball

The Trojans led 34-29 at the break. Smart shooting and lockdown defense pushed the Wolverines to victory in the second half.

WORTHINGTON – A strong second half push from Sioux City West gave the Wolverines a 72-50 victory in girls basketball against the Worthington Trojans on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans led the Wolverines 34-29 at the half.

“Credit to Sioux City West, I thought they played a really good second half,” said Worthington coach Jessica Hogan. “They were very aggressive on offense and they earned the victory today.”

Sioux City came out firing on offense in the second half with a rapid 10-2 scoring run. The Wolverines connected on seven 3-point shots in the second half, after their first half ended with only one made trey.

The Wolverines’ defense made smart adjustments at the break after being called for nine fouls in the first half. The Trojans were held to 16 points in the second half.

Tarren Spartz had a double-double for the Trojans with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Spartz scored 12 points in the first half, and five in the second. Madison Beckmann scored eight points for WHS. Beckmann scored two 3-point shots, and was 2-of-3 on free throws after a foul on another attempt from beyond the arch.

Grace Barber played pesky defense for Worthington and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Senior Ellie Weg scored two points for the Trojans in the second half which drew loud reactions from the bench and crowd. Weg injured her leg two weeks ago in a game against St. Peter played in short stints for the Trojans. Janessa Hamann, Pham Gora and Newyouman Gora scored seven respectively.

Hannah Burge was the leading scorer for the Wolverines with 24 points. Burge was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Vera Grom and Kimber Buhman scored 17 apiece.

The victory moves the Wolverines’ current win streak to 4. Sioux City West has a season record of 10-12.

The Trojans return to conference play as the girls basketball team travels to play St. Peter on Tuesday.

The Worthington Trojans boys tennis team will feature lots of new faces as the team graduated eight of its 10 varsity starters from last season.
The wrestling team had an excellent season with a record of 23-2, and will be competing in the state meet in Rochester which starts on March 30.
The Trojans finish their boys basketball season with a 21-7 record, and graduate six seniors in Abagotte Opiew, Marenono Opiew, Charles Brands, Nasim Zeidi, Mikele Walu, and Omot Okony.
