MANKATO -- The Mankato East girls soccer team earned the No. 1 seed in the Section 2AA tournament, and the Cougars certainly looked the part Tuesday night in a 9-0 victory here over the Worthington Trojans.
The Cougars led by five goals at the half en route to a 9-0 victory over the Trojans. Worthington’s season came to an end, but Trojan coach Emily Ahlquist said her program is just starting to come alive.
“The main thing is, we are seeing progress,” Ahlquist said. “We are seeing more working the ball up the field, we are seeing more passing connections. It's just not enough...yet.”
Mankato East is 15-2 overall this season. The Trojans finished the campaign with a 2-14 record.
“Mankato East is a very strong team and they definitely dominated play,” Ahlquist said. “Our girls started out not moving to the ball quick enough. They scored their first goal in the 4th minute of the game off a cross.
“We made a few mistakes that they capitalized on, and they had a few really well-placed shots that any goalie would struggle with.”
Ahlquist said senior goalkeeper Chantel Peralta had a good game.
“Chantel did a fantastic job for us this game and all season,” Ahlquist said. “She will definitely be our biggest loss going into next year. She's a tough one to replace.”
