Prep softball: Section tournaments begin
Action finally got under way on Thursday for Section 3A and Section 3AA softball.
Both top seeds, Edgerton/Southwest Christian in 3A and Pipestone Area in 3AA, advanced with ease. The next round in the respective tournaments are Saturday.
In Section 3A South, E/SWC had a first-round bye and then defeated fifth-seeded Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 10-0 in six innings to advance to Saturday’s game, where the Flying Dutchmen will face the north’s second seed, Lac qui Parle Valley.
The south’s third seed, Wabasso, defeated second-seeded Murray County Central and will face the north’s top seed, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.
In Section 3AA, the top-seeded Arrows won 14-0 and 9-1 to advance to Saturday, where they will face the north’s third seed, New London-Spicer.
Luverne, which was the second seed in the south, also won twice and will face the north’s top seed, Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta.

EDGERTON -- No problem for Edgerton/Southwest Christian.
The hard-hitting Flying Dutchmen gathered 14 hits in five innings against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton and also stroked a pair of home runs. Jazzy Prins slugged a three-run home run in the first inning and finished with three hits in four trips. Gabby Buckridge was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run. Liz Prins had a couple of doubles and Jessa Nibbelink had two hits. McKenzie Snyder was 3-for-3.
Sierra Van Dyke went the full six innings in the pitcher’s circle, checking R-T-R on three hits.
Kylea Baartman was the losing pitcher.

SLAYTON -- Amanda Muecke threw a two-hitter against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in a four-inning game, walking one and striking out four. Danielle Kuball went 2-for-3 for the winners with two runs and two RBI.
Hannah Kazemba was the losing pitcher.

Wabasso 11, MCC 8
SLAYTON -- Wabasso, after beating Adrian 11-1 in a first-round game, pounded out 13 hits in trimming MCC.
Sarah Franta was the winning pitcher. Amanda Muecke took the loss.
Muecke went 3-for-4 at the plate. Teammates Montana Beckmann and Lily Schmahl both added two hits.

Pipestone Area 14, Redwood Valley 0
PIPESTONE -- Pipestone Area defeated Redwood Valley in six innings in its first game of the section 3AA south tournament. Jessa Reinhert led the Arrows at the plate and pitching going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and pitching three innings with five strikeouts.
Adrianna Johnson went 1-for-1 with three RBIs, and pitched two innings in relief, striking out two and walking one.

Pipestone 9, JCC 1
PIPESTONE -- Adrianna Johnson pitched a complete game for Pipestone in its victory over Jackson County Central. Johnson struckout eight and walked one. Carmen Skyberg went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a homerun for the Arrows.
Blaney Johnson was credited with the loss for the Huskies pitching three innings. Ashely Heinrichs pitched two innings in relief striking out one and walking two. Jordan Rogotzke pitched the final two innings striking out one.
Abigail Turner went 2-for-3 for JCC.

LUVERNE -- Rylee Olson was throwing strikes in Luverne’s first-game Section 3AA victory over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. Olson pitched the complete game, did not allow a walk and recorded 13 strikeouts. Olson also provided a spark offensively going 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in the bottom fourth. Billi Connell went 4-for-5. Halle Hough, Kendall Buss, Sydne Johnson, and Carly Olson all had two hits for the Cardinals.

St. James 9, MCW 7
LUVERNE -- St. James defeated Martin County West in the section 3AA south tournament. St. James the three seed was able to come out on top against the sixth seeded Martin County West.

LUVERNE -- Billi Connell went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Luverne as it shut out St. James in its second section game Thursday. Rylee Olson pitched well going the complete game, walking zero, and striking out 11. Olson went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. Hali Hough went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Cardinals.
Renata Hernandez went 2-for-3 for the Saints.
