Good teams won, and good teams lost Saturday in section girls fast-pitch softball play.

One of the good teams that lost was Worthington High School, 6-2 to New Ulm in the elimination bracket of the Section 2AAA tournament.

The Trojans, who split a pair of games on Thursday, couldn’t solve one of the best pitchers in the region, Ashlyn Donner, who struck out 16 batters.

Despite that, Worthington’s Haley Grimmius was outstanding against the Eagles, going 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs. She led off the game with a solo home run, and hit another one later in the contest.

Sydney Ponto pitched four innings for WHS, allowing five runs but only three earned. Grimmius finished up.

The Trojans finished the season with a solid 13-9 record.

“We had a real good year. We did a lot of good things,” said Trojans head coach Rosalie Hayenga-Hostikka.

Here’s a rundown of Saturday action in sections 3A and 3AA:


Section 3A

Defending champion and No. 1 seed in the south, Edgerton/Southwest Christian, edged Lac qui Parle Valley in its first game on Saturday, 1-0. The Flying Dutchmen then defeated the top team from the north, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, 6-2.

E/SWC will play K-M-S, Wabasso or LQPV in the finals on Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m. in Marshall.

Murray County Central won its first game in the elimination bracket on Saturday, 1-0 against Dawson-Boyd. The Rebels couldn’t make it two in a row, however, as they were then shut out by Lac qui Parle Valley 3-0.


Section 3AA

The Pipestone Area Arrows just keep rolling along. The top-seeded south team and defending section champ, PA opened on Saturday with an 11-1 win over New London-Spicer, then beat Luverne 10-0 to qualify for the championship game on Thursday, 5 p.m., in Marshall, against an as-yet unnamed opponent.

Luverne, the No. 2 south seed, played gamely, beating Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 3-2 to set up its showdown with its Big South Conference rival Pipestone Area.

Jackson County Central played twice in the elimination bracket on Saturday, drubbing Minneota-Canby 11-5 but losing to Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 10-3. Mady Hamlett had two hits against M-C and Keylee Rossow homered and drove in three runs. JCC’s Mackenzie Moss went 2-for-2 against Morris.

Luverne will play against either Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta or St. James Area on Tuesday (6:30 p.m. at Marshall) for the right to play Pipestone Area in the title game.
