Amateur openers postponed

The Gopher and First Night League amateur baseball season was scheduled to get under way on Sunday.

But Mother Nature was the only winner.

Games in Ruthton (vs. Hadley), Heron Lake (vs. Jackson) and Lakefield (vs. Mountain Lake) were all postponed because of the wet, windy and inclement weather.

So the area’s many Town Ball teams will officially open their seasons on Sunday, May 8.

Games on the schedule, all with 2 p.m. starts, include Worthington at Milroy, Luverne at Pipestone, Fox Lake at Hadley, Ruthton at Adrian, Windom at Jackson, and Mountain Lake at Fairmont.

Several of last Sunday’s rainouts have been rescheduled. The Mountain Lake-Lakefield game will be made up on Wednesday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m., the Hadley-Ruthton game is Wednesday, June 8 in Ruthton, and the Jackson-Heron Lake washout will be played on Sunday, May 15, at 5 p.m.

Second chances

The Minnesota West baseball and softball teams are back in action today (Wednesday), and both teams will face showdowns against teams they lost to earlier this season.

At 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., the Bluejays host Century College at the Worthington college field. The doubleheader had been scheduled for Sunday (May 1), but was washed out.

The Lady Jays host a twinbill with Rochester Community and Technical College Wednesday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The baseball team was beaten by Century 12-1 and 14-0 only last Friday. On April 12, the Lady Jays were beaten twice by Rochester 2-0 and 13-5.

High school games resume

Yes, we’re hoping (optimistically) that area high school teams will play on Thursday, though the way spring weather has been this year, one never knows.

At 4 p.m. in Worthington, a four-team track and field meet is planned with Adrian/Ellsworth, Westbrook-Walnut Grove, Windom Area and Worthington involved. Also in Worthington, Fairmont plays the Trojans in a baseball game starting at 5:30 p.m.

Two Worthington teams are on the road. The boys tennis team is at Waseca for a 4:30 p.m. start. And the softball team is at Fairmont for a 5:30 p.m. game.
