ST. JAMES -- In the girls' tennis section tournament, St. James defeated Luverne 7-0 to end the Cardinals' season.

"St. James was just too tough for us today," Luverne head coach Greg Antoine said. "They are just at another level than most other teams in this area."

At No. 1 singles Mallory Shellum defeated Luverne's Autumn Wenzel 6-0, 6-0, while SJ's Danielle Munsterman defeated Cathryn Hartz 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 singles Luverne's Paige Pierce suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Megan Flohrs, while Paige Olson defeated Hannah Baartman at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles competition, Luverne's pair of Krista Van Dyk and Hilary Deragisch gave Maja Johnson and Heather Nelson a tough match. However, the pair from St. James defeated the Luverne duo, 6-3, 6-4.

At No. 2 doubles, Darci Johnson and Abby Frederickson defeated the Cardinal pair of Kelby Robinson and Liz Solma 6-0, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles team of Brooke Jacoby and Carleen Lunz defeated Maleeka Sandager and Amanda Niessink 6-0, 6-0.

"We hit the ball well today, but just not well enough to score many points," Antoine said. "As a team, we need to start just letting go and hitting the ball harder. After that we can figure out how to get it in and to score points with it."

The individual section tournament starts Thursday at Redwood Falls.
