State Class A baseball: RRC/W-WG wins tournament opener over Fosston in runaway fashion

JORDAN -- A walk-off bases-loaded walk sealed the deal for Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove as it defeated Fosston 11-1 in six innings in the first round of the Minnesota Class A state baseball tournament on Thursday at the Mini Met in Jordan.

Corey Maras drew the bases-loaded walk to push in Evan Blomgren and take the win via 10-run rule.

Falcons ace pitcher Taylor Bunting earned his 12th win of the season as he allowed one earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Skyler Reddeman closed the game out, allowing one hit and no runs with a strikeout in the sixth inning.

RRC/W-WG scored at least one run in every inning as it racked up 13 hits. It’s biggest inning was third in which it added four runs to its tally to take a 7-1 lead.

Mitchell Willhite drove in Cole Jackson with a single down the left field line. Evan Blomgren scored on a wild pitch. And Austin Irlbeck drove in Bunting and Willhite with a double to right-centerfield.

Irlbeck smashed a solo home run in the second inning in the midst of a 3-hit two run, 3 RBI game. Cole Pankonin was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run, and Maras was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run.

Fosston scored its lone run in the third inning when Brock Hemmesch drove in Brett Sundquist with a single to left field. Sundquist singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Sundquist was 2-for-2 with a run, while Hemmesch was 1-for-3 with the RBI. Jesse Sather and Joby Buchholz also had hits for Fosston.

The Falcons advance to play top-seeded Parker’s Prairie (23-3) in a state semifinal on Friday at noon. The winner will advance to the state final game on Monday at 10 a.m. at Target Field in Minneapolis. And the loser will play in the third place game on Friday at 5 p.m. in Jordan.
