MINNEAPOLIS -- Luverne’s Chris Jelken lost in the consolation championship in the Minnesota Class A state individuals singles tournament on Friday at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis, while teammates Layne Curtis and Dalton Schoeneman fell in the consolation semifinal.
Jelken fell to Minnehaha Academy’s Jose Williamson 6-0, 6-1 in the consolation final on Friday, after defeating East Grand Forks’ Ben Kern 6-4, 6-4 in the consolation semifinal earlier in the day.
On Thursday, he fell to Virginia’s Jake Seitz 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(8) in the first round of the tournament, and then defeated Pine City’s Santiago Ospino due to injury in the first round of the consolation bracket.
Curtis and Schoeneman fell 6-2, 6-7(9), 10-5 to Thief River Falls’ Carter Onkka and Michael Magnusson. Earlier in the tournament, the Luverne duo, fell to Fridley’s Leland Salter and Luke Coelho in three sets 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the tournament’s opening round on Thursday. They then defeated St. Paul Academy’s Rahul Dev and Benjamin Konstan 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 in the first round of the consolation bracket.
