WORTHINGTON - On a beautiful late July night at Olson Park, the 33rd Worthington YMCA Fun Run renewed a smile-inducing tradition.
Runners, walkers and joggers of all ages came out to the park Wednesday for half-mile, one-mile and 5K races that aren’t technically races at all.
That’s why they call it the “Fun Run.”
Grandparents all the way down to toddlers maneuvered their way through the gravel paths of the park Wednesday night, starting there and finishing there. The young ones ran at their own pace and got ample encouragement from the older ones on the course, and at the finish line. And YMCA programs director CJ Nelson, while acknowledging the benefits of a warm, breezy early evening, pronounced the event a success.
“We try to get between 80 and 100 (participants). I’d say we’re about there,” he said inbetween events.
His records said 15 were entered in the half-mile, 14 in the mile and 49 in the 5K.
It seemed like more. All along the route, family members and friends cheered on their favorites in the annual summer activity that was originally organized - and continues to this day - as a fun summer treat.
“A lot of the same families come back year after year,” testified Nelson. “There are some new families that start up about every year.”
