OWATONNA -- The Luverne High School girls tennis team took a long trip to Owatonna on Wednesday, performing indoors in the first round of the Section 3A tournament.
Blue Earth Area defeated the Cardinals 6-1, but the team's performance was better than the score indicated according to head coach Greg Antoine.
"I thought we played well," Antoine said. "We lost some key points at some key moments or the match could've been different."
Luverne lost three three-set matches. First singles player Carissa Cunningham lost 3-6, 7-6 (4), 5-10 to BEA's Tea Armstrong. Fourth singles player Liz Kelm was beaten 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 by McKenna Dutton. And at No. 1 doubles, the Cards' Roz Oye and Elise Jarchow lost 6-2, 4-6, 5-7 to the Bucs' Carissa Engesser and Maddie McCleary.
Luverne's victory came at No. 3 doubles as Lauren Ver Steeg and Solveig Tofteland defeated Lyndsey Borris and Kiley Rosenau 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Riley Severtson at No. 2 singles and Ainslie Robinson at No. 3 singles also lost to their BEA opponents. The No. 2 doubles duo of Mela Jarchow and Brynn Thier were also beaten.
Luverne will participate in the individual tournament in St. Peter beginning Friday.
