Third time's a charm: Luverne boys hockey team advances to state tourney

The Cardinals defeated New Ulm 4-2 in the Section 3A tournament final. New Ulm defeated Luverne in both regular season matchups.

ST. PETER – The Luverne Cardinals are state bound as LHS knocked off top seeded New Ulm 4-2 in the Section 3A boys hockey tournament finals on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals' season concludes with the consolation semifinal game at the boys hockey state tournament.
Cardinals will play Alexandria Area on Thursday in consolation bracket.

The Cardinals lost both of their regular season games to the Eagles by scores of 2-1 and 3-1. But, a third matchup proved to be just what the Cardinals needed to break free from the Eagles who were undefeated in section play.

The Cardinals offense was balanced, scoring one goal in the first and second periods, and two goals in the third.

The first goal on the game was scored by Brady Bork for LHS. The game would go into the first break tied as Blake Soukup scored an equalizer for the Eagles.

Blaik Bork scored goals for Luverne in the second period and third period.

New Ulm scored a third period goal to cut the lead to one.

However, the Cardinals were not finished scoring and regained insurance with a goal from Elliot Domagala to secure the victory.

The Minnesota Boys Hockey State Tournament will begin on March 8. Luverne’s opponent is to be determined.
