Worthington at Sheldon

SHELDON, Iowa -- The Worthington Trojans opened their high school wrestling season Thursday with a pair of victories at the Sheldon Triangular.

Worthington defeated Sheldon/South O’Brien 42-33 and Spirit Lake Park 66-18.


In the Sheldon/South O’Brien match, Worthington got individual victories from Alex Galvez at 113 pounds, Emanuel Sararia at 120, Dalton Larson at 126, Ethan Meyer at 138, Miat Htoo at 145, Chase Byrne at 160, Levi Hennings at 170 and Kasey Gerhard at 285.

Galvez pinned SSO’s Brian Martinez in just 41 seconds. Sararia recorded another fall over Alex Granillo in 1:45, and Larson pinned Cole Cox in 1:39.

Meyer and Htoo kept the falls coming at 138 and 145, with Meyer pinning his opponent in 5:15 and Htoo pinning his rival in 2:57.

Hennings also won by fall in 5:31.

In the Spirit Lake Park match, Trojans Galvez (113), Larson (126), Htoo (145), Mason Schulz (195) and Gerhard (285) all won with falls. Htoo’s win took only 58 seconds against SLP’s Landon Wittrock, and Schutz needed just 52 seconds to pin Logan Sandman.

Girls Basketball

Luverne 65, SWC 39

LUVERNE -- Elizabeth Wagner scored 21 points to help the Luverne Cardinals a victory over Southwest Christian Eagles 65-39 in a girls basketball game Thursday night. Christina Wagner had 12 points and Sarah Stegenga ended up with eight points.


For Southwest Christian, Madyson Fey finished with 14 points and Makenna Moss had seven points.

Friday night high school sports roundup:
WORTHINGTON – Injuries and fouls plagued the Worthington Trojans girl’s basketball team in a Big South Conference contest against stalwart St. Peter on Friday night. The Saints defeated the Trojans 74-53.
Tom Goehle, son of legendary coach Hugo Goehle, was once a star athlete at Hills-Beaver Creek High School. Now he gives back through coaching and his involvement in Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

W-WG 69, Cedar Mountain 38

WESTBROOK -- Amelia Sikel and Isabel Klumper combined for 49 points as Westbrook-Walnut Grove rolled over Cedar Mountain. Sikel scored 26 and Klumper 23.

Klumper converted five 3-point shots.

For Cedar Mountain, Aubrey Steffl scored 13 points and Paige Rose had 10.

Canby 66, Edgerton 41

EDGERTON -- Kolton Duis scored 15 points and Zach Ourada had 11 points to lead the Canby Lancers in a win over The Edgerton Flying Dutchmen 66-41.

Edgerton’s Kade Moffitt scored 13 points with two steals and Jared Fisher finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Chase Bootsma had a pair of assists.

Windom Area 81, Adrian/Ellsworth 57

ADRIAN -- The Windom Area Eagles put four players in double figures in a convincing victory over host Adrian/Ellsworth.

Henry Erickson scored 19 points, Abe McKibbin had 13, Greyson Elder 12 and Quintin Tietz 12.

Brock Henning tallied 20 points for Adrian/Ellsworth while teammate Aiden Tweet added 10.

Southwest Christian 75, Luverne 46

LUVERNE -- Dawson Rieck scored 22 points with six rebounds to lead the Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles over the Luverne Cardinals. Trevin Prins had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Jacob Uilk 9 points.

Luverne’s Gavin De Beer scored 17 points, Carter Sehr finished with 12 points and Gannon Ahrendt ended with 11 points.

The Worthington Trojans girls’ and boy’s hockey teams both played home games on Thursday night. The girls’ team celebrated Senior Night and played the non-conference Austin Packers. Austin beat Worthington 6-1.
