Track and field: Neece, Gehl separate in sub-section events
Sub-section track and field competition left the blocks on Thursday, with Section 3A Southwest in Pipestone and Section 3A East in Redwood Falls. Advancing athletes will continue on in the Section 3A meet next Thursday in Luverne.

REDWOOD FALLS -- Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda distance runner Morgan Gehl, who placed fourth in the 2018 Minnesota state Class A meet in both the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600-meter run, continued leading the southwest Minnesota field.
The spritely Gehl won the 1,600-meter race in the East section in a time of 5:06.64, beating second place Aubree Hicks of Redwood Valley (5:47.26) by a wide margin. Gehl also won the 3,200 meters in 10:58.51, well ahead of runner-up Maddie LeSage of Redwood Valley, who came in at 12:12.27.
There were other double winners from the area.
Windom Area’s Delaney Smith, who placed third in the shot put at state last year, won that event with a 42-11 throw. Smith also captured the discus toss by winging it 125-10.5.
Gracie Bucher of Windom Area won the 800-meter run in 2:26.58 and was also part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team (4:22.07) with teammates Mikalah Konz, Shiro Ogeka and Lucy Stevens.
On the boys’ side, Matt Stubbe of Jackson County Central won the 100-meter dash in 11.57 and the 200-meter dash in 23.46. Stubbe was also a part of the first-place 4x200-meter relay team (1:36.01) along with Elijah Meium-Bratrud, Evan Insichienmay and Jordan Hassing.Southwest
PIPESTONE -- Defending 100-meter hurdles state Class A champion Michelle Neece eased to victory in her signature event, claiming it in 15.82 seconds. The Pipestone Area Arrow beat another area hurdler who has won often this year, Southwest Christian/Edgerton’s Sommer Schaap, who finished second in 16.68.
Neece was a double winner, also taking the 100-meter dash in 13.19.
The Luverne girls were sharp. Gracie Zewiske won the 200-meter dash in 27.27, Brooklynn VerSteeg won the 400-meter dash in 1:01.67, Tenley Nelson copped the 3,200-meter run in 11:26.80, Mallory Thorson won the triple jump in 35-0, Jocelyn Hart won the shot put at 33-7.75, and Regan Feit won the 300-meter hurdles in 49.39. LHS also captured the 4x200-meter relay (1:47.50), the 4x400-meter relay (4:09.50) and the 4x800-meter relay (9:41.11).
Another high-caliber Pipestone Area athlete, Carter Nesvold, won the 200-meter dash in 22.83. He was also part of two first-place boys relay teams, the 4x100 (44.21) and the 4x200 (1:31.36).
Micah Schaap of Southwest Christian/Edgerton grabbed firsts in the long jump (19-7.5) and the triple jump (41-3)
