ST. JAMES -- The Worthington High School volleyball team, coming off a thrilling 5-set victory over Spirit Lake in Worthington on Thursday, captured third place Saturday at the St. James Invitational.
Worthington beat Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 2-1 (25-21, 16-25, 15-13), lost to New Ulm Cathedral 2-0 (21-25, 22-25) and beat Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 2-0 (25-18, 25-18) in pool play. In the championship bracket, the Trojans lost 2-1 to LeSueur-Henderson (23-25, 25-20, 14-16) in the semifinals and beat Edgerton 2-0 (25-14, 25-21) in the third-place match.
For the day, Addison Gerber was 45-for-51 serving with 27 points and two aces. Ellie Weg and Kamryn Spartz each added 25 points of their own, and teammate Karissa Maxwell served 22 points.
Tarren Spartz had 36 kills while Weg had 33 and Beckmann 28. Weg had 15 blocks. Tarren Spartz made 25 digs and Brooklyn-Scheitel-Taylor made 22. Gerber had 95 set assists for the Trojans, now 9-10 on the year.
Worthington's next match is Tuesday at Luverne.
