REDWOOD FALLS -- Winning two of the four singles matches and a doubles match, too, the Worthington Trojans came within one victory of beating host Redwood Valley in high school varsity tennis on Thursday.
Marah Darling at No. 2 singles and Ivy Jenson at No. 3 singles were winners in straight sets. The Trojans’ Bailey Newman and Stephie Bauman at No. 2 doubles also won.
In another match in Marshall, Luverne swept past the Tigers 5-2 by winning three of four singles matches and two of three doubles events.
RV 4, Worthington 3
Darling outplayed Redwood’s Kate Foy 6-3, 6-2. And Jenson was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over the Cardinals’ Avery Wilson.
In the other singles matches, Redwood Valley’s Payden Beran beat Kessey Aljets 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1. And at No. 4 singles, Redwood’s Talia McCorquodale defeated the Trojans’ Taya Oberloh.

Newman and Bauman breezed past Redwood Valley’s No. 2 doubles team of Audrey Munshower and Anneliese Hammer 6-0, 6-0. In the other doubles matches, Redwood’s Pari Bailey and Lexy Nelson beat Worthington’s Madison Shaffer and Madison Johnson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. Brooke Zollner and Mila Jenniges defeated the Trojans’ Calah Riley and Brooke Nordseth 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.
Worthington will play next today at 10:30 a.m. at home against Pipestone Area. On Monday, the Trojans host Redwood Valley at 4:30 p.m.
Luverne 5, Marshall 2
Only at No. 1 were the Tigers able to get a singles victory when, in a battle between strong players, Gionna Parsa outlasted Roz Oye 7-6 (2), 6-2.
The Cardinals won at No. 2, 3 and 4. At two, Elise Jarchow rolled over Marshall’s Eden Knudson 6-3, 6-0. At three, Ainslie Robinson defeated Mariah Bergjord 6-2, 6-3. And at four, Mia Wenzel won 6-2, 6-4 over the Tigers’ Regan Loft.
Luverne’s Lauren Ver Steeg and Liz Kelm beat Marshall’s Leah Schaefer and Leah Matzner 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. The Cardinals also won at No. 2 doubles with Jacey Smith and Olivia Wieneke 6-4, 7-5 over Danielle Ewing and Kayla Polejewski. But at No. 3, the Tigers’ Mackenna Eickhoff and Aubrey Bjella defeated Kristin Rud and Hope Thorson 6-1, 6-2.
