Trojans fall to Cards, 7-0

WINDOM -- Despite competing in their first game of the season, on a neutral field, the Willmar Cardinals and Worthington Trojans played a fairly clean baseball game Monday afternoon at Island Park.

WINDOM -- Despite competing in their first game of the season, on a neutral field, the Willmar Cardinals and Worthington Trojans played a fairly clean baseball game Monday afternoon at Island Park.

Scoreless through five and a half innings, the Cardinals took advantage of five Trojan errors in the bottom of the sixth to win a 7-0 decision.

"It was a clean game for the first one of the season," Worthington head coach Pat Shaughnessy said. "We paid for our mistakes in the sixth, but overall, it was a good game for us."

Scott Skaalarud earned the victory on the hill, giving up one hit, while striking out two and walking one over two innings.

Tony Thier suffered the loss for Worthington, giving up one earned run on two hits in a third of an inning -- the error-plagued sixth.

Matt King gave up no runs on one hit, while striking out four and walking three over three innings, and Travis Meinders also pitched a pair of scoreless innings, striking out two batters.

Joe Ahrens and Kyle Vaske each had hits for the Trojans (0-1), who host Jackson County Central on Thursday.

JACKSON -- Calvin Ferguson and Jake Sweetman each had a pair of hits to pace the Huskies to victory over the visiting Rebels Monday in a non-conference baseball tangle.

Tyler Rettig earned the victory on the hill for the Huskies (2-1), allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking six over 4 2/3 innings.

Ben Clarke suffered the loss for the Rebels (1-1), striking out four and walking eight over five innings.

JCC visits Windom today, while MCC hosts RRC/W-WG.

Edgerton 8, Braham 4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Playing at the Metrodome, Edgerton pounded out 12 hits and rallied late to turn a 4-2 deficit into an 8-4 victory over the Braham Bombers Monday.

Alex Elgersma had the big stick for the Dutchmen (1-2), as he ripped a pair of singles, a double and a triple, going 4-for-5, with a pair of RBIs.

Pat Kleinjan was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, while Jordan Gunnink blasted an RBI triple and finished 2-for-3.

D.J. Berning pitched a complete game for Edgerton, scattering 10 hits and giving up just two walks. Berning struck out five Bombers and held Braham (0-1) scoreless in five of the game's seven innings, including the last three.

Edgerton hosts Southwestern United at Adrian today.

LAMBERTON -- James Anderson was solid on the mound for the Wildcats, striking out seven and walking one over five innings to earn the Red Rock Conference baseball victory Monday afternoon.

Anderson also was 3-for-5 at the plate, while Ben Scheevel, Kirk McBreen and Tyler Timko each went 2-for-5 on the day.

Josh Fredrickson suffered the loss for the Falcons, giving up two earned runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking one in three innings.

Eric Altermatt, Colton Kundson and Frederickson each had two singles for the Falcons, who play at MCC today.
