Trojans win division at Jimmy John's Classic

The Worthington High School volleyball team won the "Brown" division Saturday at the Jimmy John's Classic at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, finishing ninth out of 22 teams. Addison Gerber recorded her 500th career set assist.

MARSHALL -- The Worthington High School volleyball team won the "Brown" division Saturday at the Jimmy John's Classic at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, finishing ninth out of 22 teams. The Trojans won all three of their matches on the second day of the two-day tournament, beating Montevideo 25-19 and 25-15, beating Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 25-17 and 25-15, and beating Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-21 and 25-15.

WHS went 4-1 in the tourney, losing only to St. Michael-Albertville, which finished first in the tournament.

Addison Gerber recorded her 500th career set assists for Worthington , accumulating 96. All of them have been gained in this 2021 season.

Serving: Karissa Maxwell 53-56 for 26 points and five aces; Gerber 43-for-45 with 22 points and two aces; Ellie Weg 35-for-35 with 21 points; Tarren Spartz 34-for-39 with 21 points and seven aces; and Kamryn Spartz 29 for 35 with 18 points and four aces.

Worthington is 13-12 on the season. The team's next match is Thursday at home against Red Rock Central. Fans are encouraged to wear pink for Think Pink and Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
