VFW: 3 hits are enough as Worthington downs Fulda

FULDA -- Worthington's VFW baseball team managed a mere three hits and scored three runs, but a trio of pitchers were able to keep zeros on the scoreboard in a 3-0 win against Fulda on Saturday.

Jon Reller threw the first three innings for Worthington (15-7). He didn't allow a hit while walking two and striking out eight.

Deron Soderholm was on the hill for the next two innings and allowed one hit while striking out one.

Tyler Hatterman allowed two hits, walked one and struck out two in the final two innings.

Hatterman also had a double and scored a run, while Soderholm added a double.

Nate Jensen had the third hit and drove in a run as Worthington scored twice in the first inning and added one more in the fifth.

Worthington will host Slayton tonight.

Worthington Red wins in extra innings

FULDA -- Rylan Scholtes went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and also picked up the pitching win Saturday as Worthington Red edged Fulda, 7-6, in eight innings.

Worthington Red, fresh off a second-place finish in the Windom 15 & Under tournament the previous weekend, also benefitted from a 2-for-3 performance at the plate from Aaron Pavelko. Pavelko, who connected for a single and double, also drove in a pair of runs, and Mitchell Duffy went 2-for-4 with a single and double.

Ryan Lee hurled the first six innings on the mound for Worthington, striking out nine Fulda hitters. Scholtes threw the final two, fanning three.
