WILLMAR -- Luverne got a late start after a rain delay and had to play through a downpour, but it got the job done as it defeated Duluth East 2-1 in a VFW Baseball State Tournament first round game on Thursday in Willmar.

Post 2757 entered the fifth inning trailing by a run, but Derek Lundgren and Declan Beers took care of that as they scored from second and third on a Ben Serie groundout to score the game-tying and game-winning runs. Duluth East went to first for the easy force out, and the first baseman threw home to try to get Lundgren. The throw went over the catcher’s head and Beers charged around third and scored to give Luverne a 2-1 lead.

Beers was 3-for-3 in the game with a double.

Jade Smith got the win on the mound for Luverne as he didn’t allow a hit after taking over for starter Ben Serie in the fourth. Smith allowed only one base runner -- a walk in the seventh inning -- and struck out four in his four innings.

East scored its run in a wet second inning. As rain poured out of the sky, Jaxon Edwards scored on a single.

Luverne had several opportunities to score before the fifth. It left the bases loaded to end the first and third innings, but couldn’t get the timely hit to drive in the runs.

Post 2757 plays in the second round on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Willmar.
