ST. CLOUD -- Area high school volleyball standouts Gabbie Gervais of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Abby Benson of Jackson County Central are taking their talents to the college level. But before then, they’ll hone their talents in a Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association All-Star Match in St. Cloud.
The contest takes place at 6 p.m. tonight at St. Cloud State University.
Gervais is a 5-9 setter who will attend South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., next season. Benson is a 6-1 hitter who will attend Augustana University in Sioux Falls, S.D. Both players are members of the Globe 2016 All-Area volleyball first team.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton High School head coach Katie Gervais, Gabbie’s mother, is a coach for the White Team. Gabbie will perform on the White Team tonight while Benson plays for the Red Team.
Gabbie helped lead T-M-B to third place in the Minnesota High School Class A tournament last fall. She was named to the All-Camden Conference team in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and was conference MVP in 2016.
Benson helped JCC to a 23-9 record in 2016 and a berth in the Section 3AA championship. She was named to the All-Big South Conference team for three consecutive years. She was chosen for The Breakdown top 75 juniors in 2016 and the Super 100 Seniors in 2016.
Tonight’s all-star showdown is the 30th annual featuring some of the finest high school players in the state. All 21 of this year’s players were either named All-State or Honorable Mention All-State following the 2016 regular season, and 14 players played in one or more state tournaments during their prep careers.
