LUVERNE -- Winning three of the four singles matches, the Worthington High School girls tennis team held on to edge Luverne 4-3 in a Big South Conference dual meet on Tuesday.
Luverne won No. 1 singles with Mia Wenzel defeating Marah Darling 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. But the Trojans won at second, third and fourth singles. Ivy Jenson beat Luverne's Jacey Smith 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2. Kessey Aljets beat Sarah Stegenga 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3, and Bailey Newman bested Roselynn Hartshorn 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4.
Luverne won two of the three doubles matches. Olivia Wieneke and Kristin Rud defeated Trojans Taya Oberloh and Brooke Nordseth 3-6, 7-6 (3) and 10-8 at No. 1. The Cardinals' Hope Thorson and Katharine Kelm won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 over Worthington's Calah Riley and Madison Shaffer. Worthington won No. 3 doubles as Taylor Nordseth and Hannah McNab prevailed 6-4, 7-5 over Tori Hemme and Priscilla Muehr.
Worthington will be in action again Thursday at home against St. James Area.
