If pitching is the name of the game, it appears “Redbirds” and “Pirates” are the labels to learn this summer in area amateur baseball.
Luverne’s Redbirds won twice last week, blanking Hadley 11-0 and shutting out Jackson 21-0. Luverne has only one loss on the season.
The unbeaten Windom Pirates, meanwhile, shut out Fox Lake 6-0 in the team’s only game of the weekend.

LUVERNE — Jake Haugen tossed a five-hit shutout and Ben Serie homered as the Redbirds defeated the Buttermakers last Wednesday.
Luverne 21, Jackson 0
LUVERNE — University of Sioux Falls standout Ben Serie homered for the second game in a row and Derek Lundgren pitched effectively as the Redbirds of manager Brooks Maurer defeated Jackson on Sunday.
The longballs were the first of the summer for Serie.
“Ben had a really good spring season at USF so we knew he’d start to drive the ball out for us,” said Maurer.
Windom 6, Fox Lake 0
WINDOM — Luke Gilbertson struck out nine in eight innings of work as the Pirates defeated the Foxes on Sunday.
Noah Kloss and Joel O’Riordan each had two hits for manager Nick Kulseth’s Pirates.

Heron Lake 19, Worthington 12
WORTHINGTON — Gabriel Robles had four hits and Jonathan Curry added three as the Lakers defeated the Cubs last Wednesday.
Joey Kinley, Jonathan Vega, Gage Dronen, Jankario Flores and Ike Rogers all had big nights at the plate for the Lakers. Chad Knutson pitched up the pitching victory with five innings of relief.
Lakefield 10, Heron Lake 0 (7)
HERON LAKE — Phil Pronk allowed only four hits in five innings of work as the Frogs prevailed on Sunday.
Jared Bakalyar, Justin Jass, Trevon Bargfrede and Dustin Pronk each had two hits for Lakefield.
Pipestone 3, Mountain Lake 2
PIPESTONE — Jon Faber pitched well for Mountain Lake, but the host A’s prevailed in extra innings on Sunday. Conner Jones had two hits for the Lakers.

Mountain Lake 8, Ruthton 5
RUTHTON — Levi Jahnke had three hits as the Lakers won the second game of their doubleheader on Sunday.
Blake Spinks, Rhinely Kazuma, Lucas Anderson, Jacob Brey, Trenton Renauist and Zach Spinks all hit safely for Mountain Lake.
Jackson 15, Worthington 1
WORTHINGTON — Easton Bahr had two hits and scored twice as the Bulls won on Sunday. He also walked three times.
Mason Pohlman and Andy Wolf also had two hits, while Ryan Rasche picked up another pitching victory. The veteran southpaw Rasche allowed four hits and struck out nine in seven innings. He did not issue any walks.
Lakefield 14, Ruthton 4 (7)
LAKEFIELD — Ryan Christopher had three hits and three RBIs as the Frogs won last Wednesday.
Dustin Pronk also knocked in three runs, backing the solid pitching of Keegan Klontz.
