Windom upsets Luverne in section boys basketball

Windom Area, seeded No. 4 in Section 3AA South, outscored No. 1 seed Luverne 63-56 in Luverne. In the other sub-section semifinal, second-seeded Pipestone Area eliminated Fairmont 64-57.

In Section 3A South on Saturday, Southwest Minnesota Christian beat Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 92-68 and Westbrook-Walnut Grove outplayed Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 68-53.

Sub-Section championship games for both sections are Tuesday at the high seeds, Pipestone and Edgerton.

Windom Area 63, Luverne 56

LUVERNE -- In the showdown of Big South Conference rivals, Windom Area got 22 points from Dylan Serreyn, who scored 18 in the second half as the Eagles rallied from a 35-28 halftime deficit.

Conner Redman contributed 14 points, Austin Doorenbos 11 and Henry Erickson nine. Doorenbos made three 3-point shots.

Gannon Ahrendt scored 16 points and Bailey Cowell 12 for Luverne. Ethan Beyer ahd Jayson Rops had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

WESTBROOK -- Key moments for Westbrook-Walnut Grove energized the No. 2 seed in its victory over the No. 3 seed.

As the buzzer sounded to end the first half, the Chargers’ Brady Ross sunk a 3-point shot from three-quarters of the court away. Ross played a strong game defensively, too, and in the second half Hunter Lien made two big 3-pointers that gave W-WG a little breathing room.

Lien finished with 23 points. Ethan Mischke scored 23, including 19 in the first half. He also had 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Nathan Kuehl had 14 points and Coltin Pilaczynski had 11 rebounds.

Eli Fest and Zach Thier scored 21 and 10 points, respectively for Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda.

EDGERTON -- Top-seeded Southwest Minnesota Christian was led by Carter Van Hulzen who had 31 points and 12 rebounds. Micah Schaap scored 14 and had six assists. Hunter Vander Haar had 12 points and six rebounds, and Zach Prins scored 10 points.

Aiden Wichmann kept Russell-Tyler-Ruthton close with four 3-point shots in the first half, and he finished with 26 points. Darrick Baartman scored 14 points and Cody Wichmann had 11.

Southwest Christian outscored R-T-R 50-32 in the second half. “Our pressure defensively wore ‘em down,” said coach Jamie Pap.
