Winter teams can begin practicing Jan. 4

The Minnesota State High School League announced Wednesday that the state’s high schools can begin practicing for winter sports on Monday, Jan. 4.

The Minnesota State High School League announced Wednesday that the state’s high schools can begin practicing for winter sports on Monday, Jan. 4.

The announcement comes after Gov. Tim Walz declared on the same day that Minnesota’s four-week pause on youth sports, which ended on Friday, is being extended two more weeks. Barring another pause necessitated by the need to combat the spread of COVID-19, teams may go ahead with their seasons.

Walz said in a video presentation Wednesday, “We need to get kids playing again, we know that. We know that the numbers show that kids aren’t as susceptible.”

Prior to Wednesday, the MSHSL revealed a scheduling model that floated the dates of Dec. 21, Jan. 4 and Jan. 18 as potential return-to-practice days. Reacting to the governor’s latest announcement, Jan. 4 is now open for business. But schools may start practicing at a later date depending upon their particular situations.

“While we recognize that our students, coaches and families are anxious to return to activities and athletics, the Jan. 4, 2021, date aligns well with many member schools’ calendars as they return from extended breaks,” said League executive director Erich Martens. “This opportunity to participate in athletics and activities also comes with great responsibility. It is crucial that all students, coaches, directors and officials maintain the highest standard of health and safety, both in and outside of school. Everyone must actively share the responsibility of reducing the spread of COVID-19 and keeping themselves and others safe and healthy.”

The MSHSL’s announcement of a return to practice is good news for Worthington High School, said athletic director Josh Dale.

“Obviously we want to get rolling, and get ‘em back in the gym, and get them on a normal schedule -- whatever normal is these days,” Dale said about Trojan winter sport athletes.

WHS is planning, then, on starting practice on the 4th.

The MSHSL has not set any firm dates for the beginning of games and meets, but Dale said Jan. 14 is the date most sports might unofficially start their events pending formal approval from the governor’s office.
