FAIRMONT -- Capturing the No. 1 singles and all three doubles matches, the Worthington Trojans boys' tennis team edged the host Fairmont Cardinals, 4-3, Monday afternoon in a non-conference meet.
Danny Penaredondo had to wait out the rain to complete his 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Reid Rosen at No. 1 singles.
"Danny was on fire to start the match," Worthington head coach Mike Marquardt said. "He didn't want to stop when the rain came, but came back strong to pick up the win."
Fairmont picked up all its victories in singles competition, as Tony Hoong defeated Worthington's Alex Stewart, 6-1, 6-2, Paul Miller knocked off John Shepherd, 6-1, 6-1, and Spencer Siebert edged Nezir Barden, 7-5, 6-4.
The Trojans roared back in the doubles matches, as Tim Roos and Adam Vosburgh opened with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Fairmont's Spencer King and Josh Vetter at No. 1 doubles. Mitchell Benson and Taylor Weiner followed for the Trojans with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Garrett Cochran and Aaron Wieneke at No. 2 doubles, while Dayton Williamson and David Sorensen completed the Worthington doubles sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Taylor Burgraff and Mike Kopischke in the No. 3 doubles match.

"Our doubles teams are playing very well together," Marquardt said. "A few players played singles last season, but have developed good teamwork with their partners. All the doubles teams have really good chemistry right now."
In exhibition play, Worthington's Anthony Kellen and Alex Ling won a 5-1, 3-5, 5-2 doubles match. Ling also won an 8-0 decision in singles competition, while Alex Myrom won an 8-1 singles decision. Yannick Elens lost an 8-2 decision in his singles match.
The Trojans visit Pipestone Area Thursday for a non-conference match.
Luverne 6, BV 3
BRANDON, S.D. -- With five victories in singles competition, the Luverne Cardinals defeated Brandon Valley in an inter-state boys' tennis match Monday.
"Playing in South Dakota is a treat for the boys," Luverne head coach Greg Antoine said. "They get to play both singles and doubles in the same match."
At No. 1 singles, Sebastian Sousa Soares defeated Ryan Buse, 6-2, 6-1, while Diego Federsffield defeated Ryan Truax of Brandon Valley, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Zach Sanderson was victorious at No. 3 singles over Jordan Anderson, 7-5, 6-2, while Weston Sawtelle defeated Matt Bender, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Matt Kreuch defeated Seth Hotvet 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles, while Joey Brown had the lone BV singles victory at No. 6 over Erik Stegemann, 7-5, 6-3.
"We mixed up things a little bit and tried some different combinations at both singles and doubles," Antoine said. "Our singles play was really strong today. We moved our opponents around and then finished the point with a well-placed winner."
In doubles competition, Sousa Soares teamed up with Sawtelle to defeat Bender and Buse, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles.
"Sebastian and Weston looked good together in their first match together this year," Antoine said. "Their serving was strong and they finished off points very well."
BV won the No. 2 doubles, as Truax and Anderson defeated Sanderson and Federsffield, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 3 doubles, Hotvet and Brown defeated Vickery and Stegemann, 7-5, 6-3 for BV's third victory of the day.
Luverne (5-2) will host O'Gorman JV Wednesday before hosting Redwood Valley Thursday.
