SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Sweeping a pair of games from host South Sioux City, Iowa, the summer Worthington American Legion baseball team enjoyed an impressive weekend. First game a 9-3 win over the Iowa squad, then an 11-3 win.
Defense was strong in the first game, which was highlighted by an over-the-shoulder full-speed running catch by Brock Bruns in left field and a diving stab of a line drive by Tate Gaul at second base and a stellar play by Tommy Lais at third base.
Michael Iverson threw the complete game, walking four and striking out nine. Gaul was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBIs, and Jake Brandner was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, and two RBIs.
Bruns, in relief of Damon Schutz, got the victory in the second game.
Gaul was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Brandner was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Nathan Van Orman was 2-for-2 and Blake Ahrenstorff had a double.
